Three Common Retirement Problems… All Easily Solved

There are certain universal issues that we retirees have to grapple with. Solving them is the key to a happy retirement. Here are the three biggies:

  • Boredom
  • Declining health
  • Limited income

Surprisingly, there is a simple single solution to all three of these issues: finding something profitable to do such as a part-time job or business.

How to alleviate retiree boredom

Suddenly going from working a full-time job to having virtually nothing to do, nothing to get up for in the morning, is a recipe for mind-numbing boredom.

Boredom is a first-class precursor for depression… which is rife among retirees who have nothing to do.

No longer having anything to do also imparts a dreadful feeling of worthlessness, of not being wanted or needed any more.

Having something to do… such as working for a charity, in a part-time paid job or starting a business… will bring back a feeling of purposefulness to your life.

Everything will feel worthwhile again as you develop new social contacts through your new occupation.

How to maintain your health

With nothing to do, many retirees decline physically and mentally once their working lives are over. The only solution is some type of part-time work, charitable or otherwise.

Working will help you get some exercise, keep you mentally sharp, and provide you with a social outlet so that you continue to feel connected to your fellow human beings.

How to delimit your income

Dropping from a steady salary to a state pension will represent a significant blow to your living standards unless, of course, you are rich or have a private pension or significant savings and investments.

Your dreams of the golden years with adequate funds to pursue hobbies or enjoy international tourism are no longer possible unless you can find another source of income.

Your only option is some form of paying work.

What kind of work is suitable for retirees?

Working during retirement means finding a job that will suit your interests and will generate an income that boosts your pension.

While charitable work can be absorbing and very worthwhile it does not, unfortunately, generate an additional source of income. You need a fee-paying job.

Retiree working has changed over the last 10 years. Nowadays, working no longer means going to an office or other specific location at a certain time.

Several jobs allow you to work from home. And if you start an online business, you are sure to have a home office, even if it’s just a table in a quiet place.

Your possibilities

You have three basic choices:

  • looking for a part-time job in an office or shop
  • entering the gig economy
  • starting an online business

If you are the type that thrives on structure, an old-fashioned office or retailing job is probably the best one for you. Unfortunately, the gig economy is making such jobs a bit rare.

But disciplining yourself to create your own schedule and stick to it on your own takes very little effort.

Gigging (one-off jobs)

In the gig economy you do work on an as needed basis for a client or series of clients.

These jobs usually require skilled professionals, such as graphic artists, copywriters, website designers, bookkeepers, and so on.

All you need is a CV that highlights your skills and your availability which you can promote locally offline or online all over the world.

While work is not guaranteed and you can have gaps between gigs, it does mean you can take time off when you like to travel or do the things you always dreamed about doing once you had retired.

Starting an online business

Starting a traditional offline business will likely be expensive and exhausting. So, it is not recommended for retirees.

An online business will cost almost nothing to set up and run and you can work at your own pace.

Indeed, starting an online business is perfect for retirees. It covers all the bases… beats your boredom, keeps you mentally active and provides an income that can boost you pension significantly.

Here are a few of the benefits:

  • You can be selling all around the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even while you sleep. The internet never sleeps.
  • An online business is location independent so you can manage your business from anywhere in the world provided you have a good internet connection.
  • No overheads, so costs of doing business are minimal.
  • The greater flexibility of the internet allows you to deliver a better client service.

The only thing you need, if you are not an IT expert (and most of us aren’t), are some digital skills.

For someone with just average intelligence, these are not hard to master and there are plenty of free courses online.
